Cortland Banks Awards OH WOW! Museum $1500
June 12, 2012
CORTLAND (6/12/12) – As a local community bank, Cortland Banks strives to enhance the communities in which it serves. Sara Smith, Marketing & Communications Director, said "A grant funded through Cortland Banks helps entire classrooms of students visit OH WOW!, helping our youth to develop learning skills and knowledge in a world-class facility, right in our own backyard!" In addition to the cost of transportation, admission to OH WOW!, and lunch, volunteers from Cortland Banks delivered a financial literacy program to participating students. This financial literacy program will help students become stronger savers and enable them to have a better tomorrow.
During the month of May, two of the three grants from Cortland Banks brought two local classrooms to OH WOW!: eighth graders from P. Ross Berry, in Youngstown and third graders from Willard Elementary, in Warren. As part of the American Bankers Association Education Foundation’s Teach Children to Save Program, Cortland Banks discussed the importance of saving. On May 10th, Brookfield Community Banking Manager, Dean Evans and Hubbard Personal Banker Debra Kelly taught about identity theft, keeping private information safe, and ways to protect your money. Later in the month, on May 21st, Personal Bankers from North Lima and Boardman, Maria Naples and Nadine Sedall, along with Jean Rupert from Cortland, presented a lesson that identified coins and their values. Additionally, they compared and contracted values of coins as part of a fun poem, in which the students actively participated.
To further their financial literacy initiative, Cortland Banks recently introduced, in May, a new Passbook Savings program for children ages 0 - 18. This program is structured to help facilitate strong savings, while promoting financial literacy. According to the ABA, a child with a college savings account is seven times more likely to attend college than one without, regardless of income, race, or academic achievement. Cortland Banks wants to help facilitate strength in savings within our local communities. More information on Strong Saver Passbook Savings can be found at: www.cortland-banks.com/strongsaver.
A third grant is currently available for the Fall 2012 school year from Cortland Banks. Classroom teachers interested in registering for a classroom grant from Cortland Banks is encouraged to contact OH WOW!, at 330-744-5914, or via email: email@example.com.
